Opening Keynote | A Personal Story: It Takes a Team

Abstract: This keynote session shares a teenage boy’s captivating journey to overcome adversity and turn a tragic situation on its head to fuel a positive outlook, embracing hope, and seizing opportunity. Given a 10% chance of survival after contracting Strep-Pneumonia, Influenza, and Staphylococcus on a school trip to Disneyland, he spent 3 weeks in intensive care on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine. Recovery included relearning how to walk, talk, and breathe. After making a full recovery against all odds, he played a major role in winning a £7.5m Charity Partnership, funding a new cardiac hospital wing to provide services and treat up to 20% more children. Hear this inspirational story and learn the value of the healthcare team, and how to draw on strengths to overcome adversity.
